The Tentacles of the River

Man and environment travel in an inseparable fusion. However, the connection between mankind and nature is violent and abusive, not protecting or caring.

The river IJ connects two distinct parts of Amsterdam, north and centre/east/west/south. Ecological changes now allow jellyfish to live in the IJ. The Tentacles of The River is located in an office facing the IJ and its different elements suggest the permanent dynamic of the environment. The office workers see the water.

To reveal its diverse views and layers, The Tentacles of The River makes one full rotation per hour, propelled by a custom-made, silent device. This speed was chosen to not distract the office work, yet to give a new view each time one looks up. Meanwhile, under the surface of the water changes happen; slowly, steadily, unseen and irreversible.
